Asperger's Syndrome

Asperger's syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder that impairs an individual's abilities in social and communication skills.

If you were to compare Asperger syndrome definition and Autism definition, you would find similarities with the two as Asperger's syndrome is sometimes referred to as high functioning Autism depending on what professional has made the diagnosis.

People with Asperger's are often socially awkward, naïve and unable to understand others' feelings and emotions. Individuals with Asperger disorder will often take things literally. If you say it is going to rain cats and dogs, Aspies will believe that it will rain cats and dogs until they are instructed differently.

Children and adults with Asperger's syndrome have a hard time understanding when someone is happy, sad or angry, which makes it hard for them to form relationships with others.

Autism and Aspergers individuals also have a hard time with anxiety, fears, sensory issues with food and clothing as well as making eye contact. Individuals with Aspergers often have a very high IQ and exceptional skills in math, memory, music, arts, etc. This is the area where the Asperger syndrome and definition are different than the classic Autism.

Aspergers is a relatively new diagnosis (1994) and there is no Asperger syndrome cause or cure at this time. Research is ongoing.

Dr. Temple Grandin has penned many books about Asperger's and what it is like to live with this disorder. She has books, videos and presentations available from Autism Today, Autism Asperger Publishing Company and Future Horizons. Links to their sites can be found below.

Dr. Grandin insight comes from living with Asperger's herself. These books are a might for any parent or relative of someone with Asperger's.
